  • Mortal Kombat franchise's iconic fatalities continue to be a highlight, pushing the envelope with over-the-top finishing moves.
  • This new fatality for Johnny Cage, though unofficial, adds to the excitement around Mortal Kombat 1, which launches on September 19.

During Evo 2023, one Mortal Kombat 1 player manages to pull off one of Johnny Cage's ultraviolent, yet hilarious fatalities. The finisher moves are an iconic staple of the Mortal Kombat franchise, letting players pull off an over the top and typically violent move to put a finishing touch on the match. Even as the series has gotten more and more realistic thanks to high definition graphics, NetherRealm Studios has typically made sure to make the fatalities so over the top that they come off a bit more humorous than shocking.

In fact, fatalities are one of the big highlights of the franchise in general, seeing how far NetherRealm Studios is willing to push the envelope with some of its iconic characters. It would seem Mortal Kombat 1 is in good hands as fans have already seen a handful of violent finishing moves and one in particular has seen plenty of discussion among the community. In a recent MK1 trailer for Geras and Liu Kang, the Fire God snaps his finger to open a portal into space, summoning a black hole to essentially pull their opponent apart. However, a new fatality for Johnny Cage has now been making the rounds thanks to Evo.

While yet to be officially revealed, players at Evo are able to go hands on with Mortal Kombat 1 and try out characters like Li Mei and Johnny Cage. With access to the full moves list, players have been able to discover Johnny's first fatality move, one that not only combine's ultra-violence with a dash of humor. As captured by Da Island Boyz, Cage puts his arm around his defeated opponent and takes a picture with his phone before slamming him down face first onto Johnny's plaque on the ground reminiscent of what someone would see in Hollywood. Pulling them up with all the viscera getting stuck, Cage once again takes another picture with the character whose face is basically missing.

While fans got a slight tease of this fatality back during the official Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay trailer during Summer Games Fest, this is the first time it has been shown in full. The fatality is exactly what one would expect from a member of the Cage family as Mortal Kombat 11 featured plenty of over the top finishers including one where Johnny uses the upper torso of their opponent like a ventriloquist.

As many fans at Evo has been assuming, this build of the game is likely what beta players will be getting in a couple of weeks. Featuring the characters of the first closed network test, the latest Mortal Kombat 1 beta build adds Li Mei and Johnny Cage to the roster along with Frost as another Kameo option.

Mortal Kombat 1 launches September 19 for PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X.
