There are seven types of Gems in Diablo 4, and each one comes in five different qualities. As the quality of a Gem improves, so do the effects that it provides, and players that want to maximize the power of their characters should work to upgrade their Gems as much as possible. This guide is here to provide more details on that process, and it will explain how and at what levels fans can perform Gem upgrades in Diablo 4.

As previously noted, there are five different Gem qualities, and they are as follows: Crude, Chipped, Standard, Flawless, and Royal. Players can move between these qualities with the help of a Jeweler, a Diablo 4 NPC that can be found in many towns, including Kyovashad. Indeed, the Jeweler is capable of turning three gems into one gem of the next quality, so long as the player has a bit of gold and is of the appropriate level.

With respect to the levels that players must reach in order to perform Gem upgrades, here is a full breakdown:

  • Crude to Chipped: Level 20
  • Chipped to Standard: Level 40
  • Standard to Flawless: Level 60
  • Flawless to Royal: Level 70

To note, the requirements for using Flawless and Royal Gems are Levels 50 and 60 respectively. As such, Diablo 4 players can equip these Gems before they are able to create them at the Jeweler, provided that they obtain them from another source.

While it is true that Flawless Gems are the best options at the time of writing, dataminers have uncovered evidence of three higher-quality Gems in the game files. Confirmed information about the specific effects and availability of those Gems is not currently available, though it would not be too surprising if they were eventually craftable at Levels 80, 90, and 100. Players are thus advised to continue collecting Gems, even if all their socketed Gems in Diablo 4 are Flawless, as they may be useful in the future.

The absence of a Gem bag in Diablo 4 can make this collecting a bit difficult, though, as players in the endgame may already be running into issues with storage space. Perhaps these issues will be addressed simultaneous to the release of the three Gems that are beyond Flawless, and it may not be long before fans have new ways to deal with their stashes. For now, players will need to make the best of the challenges that come with holding a large collection of Gems.

Diablo 4 is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
