Highlights

  • Gunfire Games released a new patch for Remnant 2 that fixes bugs and improves gameplay, but it also nerfs the powerful Nightfall and Enigma weapons.
  • Nightfall's rate of fire was reduced because it was dealing too much damage compared to other long guns. Enigma's area-of-effect damage and magazine size were also decreased.
  • The developer plans to further balance Enigma in a future update due to its ability to ignore enemy armor. Players generally responded positively to the changes, as it promotes diversity in gameplay.

Gunfire Games rolled out yet another major Remnant 2 patch that introduces a wide variety of bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements, but also happens to nerf two of the game's best weapons, Nightfall and Enigma. This is the second update to the action RPG that the developer released in August, arriving shortly after a comprehensive Remnant 2 hotfix was pushed out to Xbox consoles.

Originally launched on July 25, Remnant 2 debuted to generally positive reviews and favorable reception from the fans of the 2019 ARPG Remnant: From the Ashes. The game received widespread praise for its varied arsenal of weaponry, although it didn't take long for the players to realize that some of its many armaments were more viable than others, to put it mildly.

The list of such particularly broken weapons was helmed by Nightfall, a nightmarish long gun that can be obtained by beating Nightweaver in Remnant 2. However, the latest update to the game nerfs this weapon's rate of fire in both Standard and Dreadwalker modes, with the developers explaining that the original version of Nightfall was simply dealing too much damage compared to anything else. Since even the strongest alternatives (with active Mods) offered nearly 20% lower DPS, Gunfire decided to curb Nightfall's fire rate in order to bring it closer in line with other high-damage long guns.

Remnant 2 Nightfall and Enigma nerf patch notes

The newly introduced update also nerfs Remnant 2's Enigma handgun, which has been widely touted as the ultimate option for short-range engagements ever since the game hit the store shelves in July. After reassessing its original capabilities, Gunfire concluded that Enigma's area-of-effect shock rods were too effective of a clearing method, consequently reducing its AOE burst damage in Overload mode from 40 to 30. The tether damage dealt by the rods from the handgun's primary fire has also been lowered to 65%, down from the original 75%.

Finally, Gunfire reduced Enigma's magazine size from 30 to 25, with that five-bullet difference being added to the weapon's ammo reserve, which is now capped at 125. And though the developers seem happy with Nightfall following this latest update, they already confirmed that they're not done balancing Enigma. More specifically, the fact that the weapon completely ignores enemy armor has been flagged as problematic by Gunfire, with the studio planning to address that overpowered trait in a future update after some additional number crunching.

The fandom's reactions to this newly debuted update seem to skew positive, with many Remnant 2 players positing that both Nightfall and Enigma remain some of the best weapons in the game. The act of nerfing them simply made other equipment more viable, encouraging greater gameplay variety without punishing the players who don't use a select few clearly superior weapons.

Remnant 2 is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
