Terraforming the galaxy took a long time since the player didn't use TNT to clear out large areas. As for the pixel art covering the structure, they resized and converted an image of the Milky Way into blocks using a third-party plugin. Then, the player pasted the image into Minecraft's survival mode and changed its shape from square to circle to create an illusion of a vast cosmic island. It's no doubt this spiral galaxy is a testament to the creative potential of the community.
When asked how long the mining took, the original poster claimed that the entire structure was completed in one and a half years. More than 10,000 Minecraft fans have upvoted the Reddit post, with some claiming that this would be a perfect desktop wallpaper. Some also jokingly said they would legitimately pay for the schematic of the galaxy. It's hard to tell if Papaya314 will build another enormous structure in the future.
