With God of War Ragnarok capping off the series' Norse saga, many fans have started speculating about what mythology the next game could feature. Among the most popular choices is Egyptian mythology as it would be closely linked to Kratos' home of Greece and is the source of a wide variety of gods that could make for potential foes. It will be hard for this next title to top some of the boss fights from God of War Ragnarok, but the pantheon of Egyptian gods could hold the potential for some new and innovative boss mechanics.

The cinematic boss fights from God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok against foes like Thor, Odin, and Baldur demonstrate just what the series is capable of in terms of creating epic battle for players to partake in. As the series looks to grow and evolve past these entries, it will need to shake things up in order to keep the gameplay fresh. Luckily there are a wide range of ways a God of War featuring Egyptian gods could up the ante of its boss battles thanks to the various animal-human hybrid and shape-shifting depictions of these gods.

An Egyptian God of War Could Include Some Spectacular Boss Battles

The most obvious candidate for an Egyptian God of War villain is Set, since he is known as the Egyptian god of violence and chaos, making him a potential destructive force that could drive the game's plot. What makes Set such an interesting character for this game is the fact that he takes the form of an unknown animal, which gives the developers a lot of creative liberty when designing him. Aside from being the god of violence, Set is also the god of deserts, earthquakes, and storms, so having Kratos face off against him over a massive desert arena where the main gimmick is avoiding the earthquakes and fissures he creates would be an epic use of the character.

An Egyptian god closely tied to Set is the god of the underworld, Osiris, who is the brother of Set and is ultimately mutilated and murdered by him. In this story, Osiris' wife Isis rebuilds his body to the point where he is depicted as a mummified king left with only his hands and face exposed. As a boss, Kratos could battle against a giant mummified Osiris with the main gimmick being pulling his wrappings off so that his dismembered limbs fall off until he is defeated, creating a gruesome yet thematically on-point fight for a setting associated with mummies.

It wouldn't be an Egyptian God of War game without a fight against one of the most iconic Egyptian figures, Ra. This god is most often associated with being the god of the sun and is often considered to be the sun itself, which opens up the potential for an intense, fiery fight against Kratos. A boss fight against Ra could involve Kratos taking to the sky to clash with the god in both his sun form and his humanoid form, and it could even include a precursor fight against one of his loyal defenders like Sekhmet similar to Heimdall in God of War Ragnarok.

With most Egyptian gods being portrayed as humans with animal heads, as well as having another animal form, each major boss fight could have multiple phases that include a battle with each form. A game like this could also draw inspiration from the way Assassin's Creed Origins depicts some of its more fantastical elements, such as its Trial of the Gods, which has players face off against gigantic versions of these deities. Given the epic potential for battles against Egyptian gods, it's clear that the next God of War game could easily outdo previous entries by putting Kratos and the player amidst ancient Egyptian mythology.

God of War Ragnarok is available for PS4 and PS5.
