An Ancient Rivalry (Substory #61) Walkthrough

An Ancient Rivalry map location in Yakuza Kiwami 2.

Once he’s performed his duty for Majima Construction, Kiryu needs to head to Sotenbori via taxi. Once in Sotenbori, Kiryu should head to the taxi stand at the Bunzaemon Outdoor Mall, which he can reach using the same taxi. Here he’ll find a group of men hanging around, and Kiryu will be stopped by a "Burly Man" as he walks by.

The man introduces himself as Inuzuka, Bear o’ Kansai, and informs Kiryu that they are judo trainees of a master named Kawauchi. He tells Kiryu they were informed to “throw down” if they saw him. It turns out they’re all high school students, and a fellow student, Kawauchi, has put a 100 grand bounty on kicking Kiryu’s butt, supposedly as a challenge against Kiryu’s own master, Komaki.

Battle the High Schoolers

An Ancient Rivalry substory in Yakuza Kiwami 2.

Kiryu is dragged into a judo battle with the four men, who can be defeated by utilizing grabs and throws exclusively. Once Kiryu has made quick work of these gigantic high schoolers, they'll leave, and Kiryu is approached by another student named Motoe.

Motoe informs Kiryu that the fight was merely a test of his ability, informing him that the Kawauchi School and Komaki School are rivals in martial arts. Motoe had heard that Komaki passed on his training and the entire school to Kiryu and implores him to challenge and defeat his brother, Gensho Kawauchi.

Motoe explains that Gensho has become power-hungry and left Osaka for Kamurocho, seeking to battle the ultimate challenger, which it turns out is Kiryu. Gensho has become obsessed with his desire for combat, and Motoe is quite worried about him. Motoe begs Kiryu to defeat him in battle and convince him to return to Sotenbori, and the Kawauchi School, to continue his training.

Return to Kamurocho and Head to the Coliseum

Kiryu determines that the best place to look for him is the Coliseum in Purgatory. Kiryu should hop a taxi back to Kamurocho, then taxi up to East Park. Enter East Park and head down into Purgatory to reach the Coliseum at the first door down a short hallway to Kiryu’s left.

Tempest Tournament in Yakuza Kiwami 2's Coliseum.

At the Coliseum, Kiryu will need to participate in the Tempest Tournament, the second tournament on the list. Select the tournament and check the list of combatants. Kiryu is looking to battle an enemy with the “Jujutsu” fighting style, which can be either Gensho or another fighter.

To guarantee he’ll get to fight with Gensho, Kiryu can back out of the tournament menu and select it again until he sees the “Jujutsu” style listed twice, in which case one of the participants is guaranteed to be Gensho.

Fight and Defeat Gensho in the Tempest Tournament

Fighting Gensho in Yakuza Kiwami 2's Coliseum.

Fight Gensho in the Coliseum, who is annoying with his grabs and throws, but as it is a very low-difficulty tournament, he should be relatively easy to defeat quickly. After defeating Gensho and winning the tournament, Kiryu will receive his regular reward, and immediately afterward, a cutscene will play. Gensho apologizes to Kiryu and assures him he will return to his brother and the Kawauchi school in Sotenbori.

Kiryu should then exit Purgatory and East Park and can grab the taxi right outside to return to Sotenbori and back to the Bunzaemon Outdoor Mall. Here he’ll find Motoe, and after a brief conversation, he will receive Kawauchi’s Primer and finish the substory.

Afterward, Kiryu can hop a taxi back to Kamurocho, then over to the East Taihei stop and walk over to Senryo Ave. A short distance down the road, he’ll see Gensho standing near a building. Speaking with him will unlock him as a silver R-rank employee of Majima Construction for use in the Clan Creator minigame.
