Once players prove their worth to the Graybeards of High Hrothgar, the Graybeards ask the Dragonborn to retrieve the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller. Jurgen was the order's founder, and once players have retrieved his horn the Graybeards will formally recognize the Dragonborn and complete this early section of the main quest of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

To find this horn, players must venture to the barrow known as Ustengrav in the northwest of Skyrim. Reaching Ustengrav is easy enough, and players can either travel southeast from Solitude or northeast from Morthal. However, things quickly become complicated once players go inside.

Upper Ustengrav

Skyrim Horn Ustengrav First Area

When players first reach Ustengrav, they should encounter a necromancer and several bandits fighting each other. Players can jump right in, but if they hide and wait the enemies should thin each other's ranks and make the fight easier. The entrance to the tomb is in the large pit nearby.

Once inside, players will note that the fighting between bandits, mages, and the draugr guardians continues. If players use stealth, most of the fighting will end by the time they show up. Eventually, players will come across a corridor with several alcoves along the sides. These alcoves contain spellcasting traps, but the soul gems that power them are already gone. A side room full of urns has a secret door on the left, but this is the shortcut back to the surface. On the right side players can find The Mystery of Talara v2, a Restoration skill book.

Head down a staircase to find a Nord weapon and a pile of gold coins on a table. Next to the table is a pull chain that opens a secret passage to a chest. Past this area is a large chamber with two upper walkways and several active draugr. The way to the upper walkways is on the far side of the room, and don't forget to check the chest along the way. Past this room is the door to Ustengrav Depths.

Ustengrav Depths

Skyrim Ustengrav Depths

Players will see the main area of Ustengrav Depths through a vine-covered opening and then an upper path, but the way down passes through a few other rooms first. Still, players can take this opportunity to snipe the skeletons patrolling below.

The first area is a large dining hall, and players can sneak past the draugr here by entering a side passage to reach the exit on the far side of the hall. Past it is a rough chamber where draugr will emerge from sarcophagi, but players can potentially destroy both of them by shooting a lantern hanging above an oil puddle. This area also holds a room protected by two gates: the handle for one is right next to the gates, and the handle for the second is above one of the draugr sarcophagi.

Moving past that area, players will find themselves back in the main chamber of Ustengrav Depths. A series of upper walkways leads to a hidden area, but the walkways are broken and too far apart to jump across. However, players can use the Whirlwind Sprint shout to cross the gaps and reach a loot chest.

The lower area in the chamber has a few ore veins players can mine, plus there's a Word Wall where players can get a word for the Become Ethereal shout. There's also a hidden room behind the waterfall.

Back up on the main level, players should see a dead draugr holding down a flame trap panel. This is to let players know what these panels look like and what they do. Fortunately, players can step around the trap to explore the upper area.

The way forward is across the long land bridge. On the far side are three stone posts that activate when players move next to them, and they open the gates that lead to the next chamber. However, the gates only stay open for a few seconds, so the only way to get past them is with Whirlwind Sprint. Fortunately, if players get stuck partway through there are pull chains that will open the gates leading back.

The following area is full of frostbite spiders and flame traps, but fortunately most of the flame traps are spent and no longer work. The final area holds a walkway between two pools, and eagle statues emerge from them as the player walks forward. At the far end is the resting place of the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller, but instead of the horn players will find a note. Keep going forward to find a large loot chest and the shortcut back to the entrance.

Tracing the Horn

Skyrim Delphine

To actually find the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller, players must read the note and follow its instructions to return to the Sleeping Giant Inn in Riverwood. Ask for an "attic room," enter the room indicated, and Delphine will reveal what she actually knows. This starts the next main quest "A Blade in the Dark," and in the process Delphine will give the Dragonborn the horn.

Players can start on the next quest right away, but to fully complete this one they should return to High Hrothgar and give the horn to Arngeir. The Graybeards will acknowledge the player as the Dragonborn, and teach them the final word of the Unrelenting Force shout as a reward.
