  • Peter's Symbiote abilities include launching tendrils, turning into a spiked Symbiote ball, blocking and parrying attacks, and grabbing and slamming enemies into the ground.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is one of the most highly anticipated games of the year and for good reason. 2018's Marvel's Spider-Man proved that Insomniac Games knew how to handle the license, and showed the world just how passionate the team was by creating a love letter to the hero's long history, along with delivering a great original story. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales just further cemented the public's faith in Insomniac Games, and now fans can't wait to get their hands on the fully-fledged sequel later this year.

Releasing on October 20, 2023, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has released just three trailers since its announcement back in 2021. The first of these trailers was primarily used to tease the game's villains, Kraven the Hunter and Venom, while the most recent Marvel's Spider-Man 2 trailer finally gave fans a better overlook of the game's story. But by far the most important Marvel's Spider-Man 2 trailer was its second one, giving fans 10 minutes of gameplay, and showcasing some incredibly exciting new abilities for Peter Parker's Spider-Man.

According to Insomniac Games' Senior community manager Aaron Jason Espinoza, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will feature three separate skill trees. One of these skill trees will be for Miles Morales' exclusive set of bioelectric powers, one will be for Peter Parker's Symbiote suit, and one will be a shared skill tree between the two Spider-Men, presumably encompassing various gadgets and other technological abilities.

Fans have gotten some brief glimpses at this shared technology during Marvel's Spider-Man 2's several trailers. During the second Spider-Man 2 trailer, both Miles and Peter use Web Wings to glide through New York City. While these wings are activated, players can seemingly use wind slipstreams to increase their speed and can swing out at any time. And though Miles is the only one to use it in the trailer, it seems likely that Peter's Spider-Man will also be able to use the super slingshot move to propel himself off a rooftop.

Of course, the vast majority of Peter Parker's abilities in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will revolve around the inclusion of the Symbiote suit. Again, the second Spider-Man 2 trailer is the primary source of information here, with a total of four Symbiote abilities being shown. Seemingly mapped to L1 and one of the face buttons, Peter Parker's Symbiote abilities are a set of extremely powerful offensive attacks. One ability allows Peter to launch two huge tendrils at two enemies, immediately incapacitating them.

Another ability sees Peter turn into a spiked Symbiote ball, dash into a group of enemies, and launch them into the air for a quick combo. Peter also seems to be able to use the Symbiote defensively, using it to automatically block and parry an oncoming attack. The final and most powerful of Peter's Symbiote abilities sees him grab multiple enemies with tendrils, and slam them into the ground.

It's currently unclear just how the Symbiote suit is going to work in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, and whether it'll have any time limits or negative consequences, but these abilities all seem exclusive to Peter while he's in this form. But with Peter presumably not getting the Symbiote suit for a little while, and potentially losing it before the end of the game, it's not too far-fetched to assume that he'll have another set of abilities that don't rely on the Symbiote. If this is true, then it's likely that these abilities will center around Peter Parker's new mechanical arms, which can be seen in the tiny bit of gameplay footage within Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launches on October 20 exclusively for PS5.
