Baldur's Gate 3 begins with the player escaping a Mindflayer Nautiloid, infected by a Tadpole, and seeking a cure. Fortunately, the game doesn't leave players to face its vast world alone. From the beginning, players are able to recruit some allies from the other escapees of the Nautiloid, and as the game continues they will have the opportunity to recruit additional allies to their cause.

Baldur's Gate 3 has a limited party size, so players will inevitably have to leave some party members back at the camp while exploring the world. This guide will explain how to modify the party and swap out party members, allowing players to (hopefully) bring the perfect ally for whatever situation they're walking into.

The process of swapping party members is a tad fiddly, but not all that complicated. Once a player has a full party, any additional party members they recruit will automatically move to the camp and remain there until called. Players can head to the campsite via the fast travel menu on the map, where they can interact with their party and any other allies that are traveling with them. Once there, players can speak to anyone currently in the party and, among the other dialog options, there will be an option to ask them to leave the party. They'll always ask if the player is sure, so say yes to remove them from the party and leave them at camp for a while.

With an open slot in the party, players can then speak to any of the allies that can be added to the party who are currently at camp to ask them to join the party, filling the empty slot. This allows players to change up the party freely and there is no penalty for doing so. Party members will still gain and lose companion approval of the player based on their decisions, even while they are not in the active party, so this cannot be used to avoid upsetting a party member with a decision they don't like.

Any available party members will always be hanging around camp if they aren't in the active party, and since the camp can be visited at any time when not in combat and players can then return directly to their prior location party members can be swapped out at any time outside combat.

Baldur's Gate 3 releases on the 3rd of August 2023 for PC and Mac, and the 6th of September 2023 for PS5.
