This mind flayer has a history with most of the party in Baldur's Gate 3 and, understandably, a character of either a good or evil alignment may want to end it all here. But there is also a chance to take mercy upon the dying Mind Flayer and feed it.

This article divulges consequences within the game and reveals information the player's character may not know. Gamers that are committed to role-playing may wish to stop reading and find these things out for themselves.

  • Ends the tyranny of the Mind Flayer on the spot

If players resist the Mind Flayer, it will die and players can then choose to either kill it directly or leave it to slowly perish. This may seem like a particularly vindictive option but there is no redemption arc for this particular Mind Flayer; if permitted to survive, it will continue to be evil.

Think back to the Sacrificed Cultists onboard the Nautiloid. These characters were unable to be saved and there will be more of them if the Mind Flayer is helped. The Mind Flayer doesn't want the feeding as an act of mercy, it wants to feed as an act of mastery over a subservient being.

  • Instantly kills the character and triggers a fight

When playing with friends, somebody may want to make the unfortunate choice to feed the Mind Flayer. Unfortunately, the creature doesn't take just a little bit of blood to survive, it will instantly kill the character that feeds it.

Players can not help this character back up; they must be resurrected by Withers back at the base (presuming they've answered Withers' question correctly). After this death, the other three characters will have to find the refreshed Mind Flayer in a combat encounter.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available in Early Access on PC and will be available on August 3rd, 2023. The PlayStation 5 version will be available on September 6th, 2023. A version for Xbox Series X/S is still in development.
