It's no secret that Remnant 2 is a challenging game. Here, players will be hopping through worlds while fighting all manners of monsters, from the murderous Dran and Fae of Losomn to the omnipresent, world-eating menace that is the Root. Surviving every fight will be a challenge, especially in the game's harder difficulty modes.

It's easy to play Remnant 2as one would a game like Dark Souls, but ducking and diving between incoming attacks isn't enough. Here are seven tips to help series newcomers make their journey between the realms a little easier.

7 Stick with One Set of Weapons

While it's tempting to use every weapon players come across, it's important to stick to just one set of them while doing their initial campaign run. This is become Scrap, and upgrade materials are relatively scarce.

Scrap is the game's main currency, and it's used to purchase and upgrade all items. Improving weapons is very expensive, and players will need to be as strong as they can possibly be once they reach the final stretches of their first campaign. Aim to at least get a preferred Long Gun to +15 by the end of the third world to make the final act a bit more bearable.

6 How to Get More Scrap

Unlike the first Remnant, Scrap is given in much lower quantities this time around. One of the best ways to get more Scrap is to hunt chests—most of which are now shown on the 3D map. Players will know they're near a hidden one if they hear a shimmering noise.

One other way to get Scrap is to break prop items like barrels and vases constantly. Get a wide-swinging melee weapon like the Greatsword or simply roll through to break them.

5 Use Mutators

Armor sets in Remnant 2 no longer have any unique bonuses. These have all been moved to Mutators, special items that can be slotted into any of the player's weapons. These are fairly useful early on, but they all truly start to shine once they're fully upgraded.

Upgrade Mutators by visiting Dwell in front of the shooting range in Ward 13. Players will need to spend a ton of resources for this though, so make sure to come stocked.

4 How to Backstep

Backstepping an attack in Remnant 2

Backstepping is a defensive maneuver that's much quicker than a normal dodge roll. It's great for avoiding combo attacks and fighting in places where space is limited. To perform one, simply press the dodge button without using any movement inputs.

A backstep can be followed up by a normal or charged melee attack. Every melee weapon in the game has a unique lunging move tied to this mechanic, while some have special attacks that can only be executed after a backstep.

3 Dealing with Armored Targets

Armored enemies take significantly reduced damage from physical attacks. If players are getting gray damage numbers, then they can either shoot different parts of an enemy's body, break the armor by shooting it consistently, or switch to a weapon that deals elemental damage. Even a normal gun modded with Hot Shot or Acid Shot can rip through an armored enemy without much hassle.

Damage-over-time effects like Bleeding and Burning are also great for beating armor. Guns or mods that apply the Corroded status effectively negate armor protection as well.

2 Equip Relic Fragments

Players can get more stats just by slotting in Relic Fragments into their equipped Relic. Open the Inventory screen, inspect a Relic, then hover over the empty fragment slots.

Relic Fragments offer stat boosts separated into offensive, defensive, and utility categories. Players can get higher-quality versions of these by playing in harder difficulties, with Regal-tier fragments dropping on Apocalypse mode.

1 Swap Archetypes for Faster Leveling

The Archetype screen in Remnant 2

After reaching level 10 on a main archetype, players should swap this out for their chosen secondary archetype to level it up faster. The equipped main archetype seems to get more XP than the secondary one, so there's no reason not to do this apart from missing out on one archetype's Prime Perk.

Players will be able to use a second archetype once they spend at least 10 Trait Points total. They will also need to find or purchase specific class-related items and unlock them by speaking with Wally at Ward 13.

Remnant 2 releases July 25 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
