The Soulslike game genre is famous for its dark fantasy settings and high-difficulty gameplay, which at times can be a brutal experience for players. In Gunfire Games' latest release, Remnant 2, all the characteristics that have made the genre so popular are on show in the sequel to the popular Remnant: From The Ashes. From stunningly dark environments to ruthless monsters, the game has everything an enthusiast could ever ask for and more.

Despite all the unforgiving facets of this challenging game, there is one particular area that Remnant 2 is perhaps a little more generous than a standard Soulslike title, that being player deaths. With the exception of the game's Hardcore mode, players will find that dying in Remnant 2 doesn't cost as much as it maybe should. Here is everything players need to know about the penalties associated with dying in the game.

Is There A Penalty For Dying?

The death notice that appears after a player dies in Remnant 2

Remnant 2 is not known for being a particularly forgiving game, given the copious amounts of incredibly challenging worlds and bosses that seem to murder players in the blink of an eye. However, when it comes to dying, the team at Gunfire Games is uncharacteristically generous toward players who meet their demise. Despite collecting items since their last checkpoint, players will not lose the treasures they find prior to their death. This means that any valuable items that are picked up along the way can be used in the next run, which arguably is giving players the opportunity to progress through a section of the game with the advantages that were intended for more successful players.

With that said, dying in Remnant 2 is not without its frustrations. The game is full of tough enemies, bosses, and puzzles that are capable of bringing players to a frustratingly swift death. While they may maintain the items they collect on their journey, the location they are in will reset upon death, meaning players will need to face the very things that killed them all over again. This can be especially frustrating if a player has progressed deep into a dungeon, as they will have to retrace their steps from the beginning to get to their previous point. Although, if a player has found a particular facet of the game to be too difficult to overcome, there is always the option to reroll the campaign and adjust the difficulty settings.

To add to the game's generosity when it comes to player deaths, there is no limit to the number of times a player can die, as there is no Game Over function in the game. The exception to this rule is Remnant 2's Hardcore Mode, which only grants players one life to play through the entire game with. So when it comes to dying in Remnant 2, the only true penalty is the player's pride.
